With winter almost upon us, you may find your hair looking dull and heavy. Maybe you are noticing more flakes or an itchy scalp. Or perhaps you are simply searching for a natural weekly treatment. Look no further than your kitchen cabinet! Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is a natural and organic topical treatment for all hair and skin types that has so many benefits.

Our hair and the natural oil that come from our scalp have a ph level somewhere between 4.5-5.5. When kept at this acidity level, the scalp is safeguarded against fungal and bacterial growth. Therefore, it is extremely important to use cleansers and products that are ph balanced. (This is yet another reason why we love New Wash by Hairstory…it is ph balanced!) Unfortunately, most shampoos and hair products are not, and this throws the natural ph of our hair and scalp way off balance.

Some common conditions that ACV can help with include:

•Flaky scalp. If you're experiencing a flaky scalp, ACV is your answer! It is naturally high in acetic acid and has a ph close to that of our own hair and scalp. Acetic acid is a potent antimicrobial that can kill fungus, which is one of the underlying causes of dandruff and hair loss. Rinsing once a week with ACV can dramatically improve your flaky scalp. So get rinsing!

•Dull hair. If your hair has lost its luster, product buildup may be to blame. Use ACV to remove product buildup and restore your hair’s natural shine! Just make sure to leave it on your hair for at least three minutes. The vinegar needs this amount time to break up the molecular structure of the residue.

Apple Cider Vinegar has many other amazing benefits - it eliminates static, is a great detangler and reduces frizz. What more can you ask for?!

How to use ACV on your hair:

•First, be sure to reach for the ones labeled organic, raw and unfiltered

•Make a rinse for your hair and scalp by mixing 1 cup of water with 2-4 tablespoons of ACV

•After you have cleansed your hair, pour the mixture onto your scalp, allowing it to flow down the length of your hair. Be careful to avoid getting it in your eyes

•Massage your scalp and hair gently for a few minutes

•Rinse thoroughly

I recommend doing this rinse weekly to maintain a healthy scalp and hair!

Worrying about your hair smelling like a pickle? Don’t be. Once your hair is dried, the ACV smell will disappear! Here’s to happy, healthy and ph-balanced scalp and hair!
